The technical explanation

When a hydrocarbon fuel (methane molecule) is combusted, the first to be oxidised are the hydrogen atoms (electrons on their outer shells). Only then the carbon atoms are subsequently burned. Since it takes less time to oxidise hydrogen atoms in a high speed internal combustion process, in normal conditions some of the carbon will be only partially oxidised, which is responsible for the incomplete combustion. Oxygen combines with hydrogen readily, however the carbon-oxygen reaction is far less energetic - we should keep in mind: oxygen alwasy has a valance of minus two. The valance of carbon on the other hand can be plus or minus due to the configuration of its four electrons in the outer shell, which requires a total of eight electrons for completion.

The optimum combustion efficiency (performance) obtained from the MAXPower application on fuel is first indicated by the amount of increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) produced, which has been validated by official emission control devices. As the pollutants decrease, the combustion efficiency increases proportionally. The reduction of HC and CO emissions is easily proved by comparative gas flue analysis and opacimeter emissions tests.

Fuel inside the cylinder is ignited by an electrical spark from the spark plug.

The fuel combusts very rapidly creating a force which pushes the piston down and makes the crankshaft turn.

This crankshaft motion is then transferred through various gearing to the wheels and makes the car move.

Therefore, you have a finite time taken for a piston to go down and up again for the combustion process to take place.

Whatever fuel remains un-burnt during this finite time is wasted and is expelled in the exhaust gases as hydrocarbons. These can be measured using an exhaust gas analyser as used during the MOT test ~ too high a level and the vehicle will fail.
